Settling in: The Department of English and American Studies
The mentoring service and tutorial program of the Department of English and American Studies are tailor-made for first-year students. They enable a smooth transition to university life and equip first-year students with foundational academic skills they need to kickstart their studies.
A team of two mentors is happy to answer your questions about studying at the University of Wuppertal. The mentoring service and tutorial program are further categorised into programs for the acquisition of foundational skills for students and program-specific tutorials that help you prepare for your final exams.
1.) Programs for the acquisition of general foundational skills for students
During the welcome week a series of "Get started" tutorials given by our team of eight tutors. These 45-minute tutorials give first year students orientation during the first semester at the university. In small groups of 15-20, participants get acquainted with first steps at the university.
Workshops for second semester students: These workshops take place in February and March every year. First year students are given organisational tips for their study program from the second semester onwards.
Additionally, there is a special office hour offered by two of our tutors for first-year students with concrete questions regarding organisational tips for their study program from the second semester.
2.) Tutorials for acquisition of basic academic skills
The tutorials offered within the mentoring service are conducted during the semester. In these tutorials students practice basic academic skills and revise content covered by the department's foundational seminars (Grundlagenseminare: Literaturwissenschaft und Sprachwissenschaft). The scope of the tutorial program includes repetitorials and mock exams which are geared at helping first-year students prepare for their final exams and receive feedback on their performance prior to taking the final exam. The following tutorials are offered:
- Tutorials: GLS A and B (Syntax and Semantics)
- Tutorials: GLS A and B (British and American Literature)
- Repetitorials: Repetitorials in preparation for final exams, MAP B1 and MAP C1
